India and Canada have reached a series of agreements focused on critical mineral cooperation and uranium supply for nuclear power, according to announcements made by the leaders of both countries in New Delhi on Monday. The accords, described as a "landmark" by officials, also include commitments to collaborate on technology and the promotion of renewable energy sources.
The agreements were unveiled following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders emphasized a renewed sense of cooperation and optimism in the bilateral relationship. "Our ties have seen a new energy, mutual trust, and positivity," Prime Minister Modi stated during the announcement.
The relationship between India and Canada had previously deteriorated in 2023 after allegations from Ottawa accusing New Delhi of involvement in a deadly campaign against Sikh activists in Canada. India denied these accusations. The recent visit by Prime Minister Carney, his first to India since assuming office last year, is seen as an effort to reset diplomatic relations and expand trade opportunities beyond traditional partners.
Officials highlighted that the agreements cover not only the supply of uranium for India's nuclear power sector but also broader cooperation in critical minerals, technology, and renewable energy. The leaders noted that there has been increased engagement between the two governments over the past year, with some sources suggesting it surpasses the level of interaction seen in more than two decades.
Both sides expressed hope that the new agreements would pave the way for further collaboration and strengthen economic and diplomatic ties. Details regarding the implementation and timelines of the agreements were not disclosed in the official statements.
