MAILSI: A man allegedly set his mother-in-law on fire in Punjab’s Mailsi area after his wife refused to reconcile and return home, police said on Monday.
According to initial reports, the suspect’s wife had left him and moved back to her parents’ house following a domestic dispute. The man visited the residence to persuade her to come back, but when she refused, he lost his temper and reportedly poured petrol on his elderly mother-in-law before setting her ablaze.
Hearing her screams, neighbors rushed to help, but the suspect fled the scene before he could be caught. Police and rescue teams soon arrived and shifted the victim, identified as Iqbal Mai, to a nearby hospital.
Doctors confirmed that she sustained burns on nearly 30 percent of her body, including her arms and back. Hospital sources said her condition is stable.
Police have recorded statements from the victim, her daughter, and other witnesses. A search operation has been launched to arrest the suspect, identified as Aamir Sohail, and authorities expressed confidence that he would be taken into custody soon.
