BYC supporters stage Quetta protest over life term for Mahrang Baloch

QUETTA: Workers and supporters of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) held a protest on Sariab Road on Monday against the life imprisonment handed down to the group’s chief organiser Dr Mahrang Baloch and another BYC leader, Sibghatullah Shahjee.

The demonstrators assembled at Bashir Chowk, set tyres on fire, placed barricades on the road and raised slogans against the government, disrupting traffic in the area.

Dr Mahrang Baloch was detained along with other leaders of the organisation in March last year. She was later tried in an anti-terrorism court in connection with the death of an FC man during the Raji Muchi gathering in Gwadar in July 2024. The same court also awarded life imprisonment to Sibghatullah Shahjee.

The protest had originally been planned outside the Burma Hotel, but the local administration deployed a heavy police presence and did not allow BYC workers and supporters to demonstrate there, after which the protest took place in the Sariab Road area instead.
