Surgeons remove 50 objects from man’s stomach: Here’s why he swallowed spoons, pens, and toothbrushes

HAPUR: In a startling medical case, surgeons in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, removed 50 objects, including 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two sharp pens, from the stomach of a 40-year-old man from Bulandshahr. The emergency surgery, led by Dr. Shyam Kumar on September 17, revealed an extraordinary collection of everyday objects inside one person’s body.

The man, who had been admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad a month earlier, complained of severe abdominal pain before being rushed to the hospital. Doctors explained that his behavior was linked to a psychological condition where individuals impulsively ingest non-food items, often driven by extreme emotional distress. The patient shared that feeling mistreated and deprived of food at the de-addiction centre led him to swallow these objects in a desperate act of self-harm.

Medical experts noted that this condition, often referred to as pica, can be triggered by severe stress or trauma. The surgery, which was as complex as it was rare, involved the careful removal of each object to avoid damaging vital organs. Despite the complexity of the procedure, the surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged on Thursday in stable condition.

This case highlights the need for better mental health care and the importance of emotional support for individuals in rehabilitation or de-addiction centers. The incident serves as a reminder of how neglect or mistreatment can lead to self-destructive behaviors.
