LOS ANGELES: For the first time in 15 years, The Walt Disney Company has announced the development of a new theme park in Abu Dhabi, set to open in the early 2030s. This new Disneyland Abu Dhabi resort will be the company’s seventh global destination, expanding Disney’s reach into the Middle East, a region with a growing tourism market.
The announcement, made shortly after Disney reported strong second-quarter earnings, marks a significant expansion for the company’s theme park division, which has become a key financial driver, contributing 59% of its operating income in the 2024 fiscal year.
The resort, being developed in partnership with Miral, an Abu Dhabi-based company, will feature a unique theme park and several hotels, designed by Disney Imagineers to reflect the local culture and surroundings. Located on Yas Island, the resort will join other major attractions on the island, such as SeaWorld and Warner Bros. World.
Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, emphasized that the park would not simply replicate existing Disney parks, but would be designed to reflect the specific culture of Abu Dhabi, integrating local elements into its design, food offerings, and attractions.
The decision to build in Abu Dhabi was influenced by the region’s strategic position, as well as its impressive infrastructure. D’Amaro noted that with 500 million people in proximity, the resort will have access to a large potential visitor base. Abu Dhabi’s future-oriented development, combined with easy access from regional airports, further solidified its appeal.
Disney’s new park is set to be the most technologically advanced of its kind, integrating immersive gaming and cutting-edge attractions. The park will also be the first Disney resort to be built directly on a waterfront, offering a unique experience for visitors.
Despite the excitement, some industry experts have raised concerns about the potential profitability of the venture. Dennis Speigel, founder of International Theme Park Services, noted that while Dubai has experienced mixed results with its theme parks, Abu Dhabi’s established leisure infrastructure provides a more manageable entry point for Disney.
As Disney continues to expand its global footprint, the Abu Dhabi project represents an ambitious and exciting chapter for the company, promising a blend of magic, innovation, and cultural resonance.
