NEW DELHI: In a big boost for opposition alliance INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) ahead of the general election next year, members of the bloc scored four wins in by-polls to seven seats across six states on Friday. The BJP had victories on three seats.
In the by-polls, INDIA’s constituent party Congress emerged victorious in Kerala’s Puthuppally constituency. Bebi Devi of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha – a constituent of the INDIA – won the Dumri seat. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress wrested the Dhupguri seat from the BJP in West Bengal. Similarly, In Uttar Pradesh’s Ghosi constituency, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, backed by INDIA, registered victory.
BJP won Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats in Tripura and Bageshwar seat in Uttarakhand.
The polling for the by-elections on seven assembly seats in six states was held on September 05. The by-poll results are seen as a test for the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc against the BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) ahead of the five state assembly elections scheduled later this year and the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2024.
