Gao Tingyu breaks Olympic record en route to gold in men’s 500m

Gao Tingyu of Team China set a new Winter Olympic record by finishing the speed skating men’s 500-meter final in 34.32 seconds at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing on Saturday.

Cha Min-kyu (34.39) of South Korea and Wataru Morishige (34.49) of Japan pocketed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

It’s the first men’s speed skating Olympic gold for Team China in history.

Gao, who served as a flag bearer for Team China at the opening ceremony of this year’s Games, also competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and won the bronze medal in the same event.

Gao, who was 20 years old at the time, shouted “Believe in yourself!” in front of the camera.

This year, he yelled “We are the champions!” after winning the gold medal at Beijing 2022.
