Authorities identify 12 more victims of Gul Plaza tragedy, total reaches 39

KARACHI: The remains of 12 additional victims of the Gul Plaza collapse in Karachi were identified on Thursday, raising the total number of confirmed victims to 39.

Officials said identification was carried out using a combination of mobile phone location data and proof of presence. Among those identified were three members of a North Nazimabad family—Umar Nabeel, his wife Dr Ayesha, and their son Ali—who had visited the plaza for shopping.

Authorities confirmed that 79 bodies have been recovered from the site so far, with identification ongoing for the remaining 40 victims.

The newly identified remains also include Khizar Ali, Haider Ali, Aamir Ali, Abu Bakar, Yasin, Sadaqatullah, Yousaf Khan, Nemat Ullah, Abdullah, and several others. Some of these have already been handed over to their families.

Of the 39 confirmed victims to date, 20 were identified through DNA testing, six through facial recognition, and one via a national identity card.

Officials said that efforts to recover and identify the remaining victims are continuing, as authorities work to provide closure to the affected families.
