PTI raises alarm over Imran Khan’s reported eye condition

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Tuesday expressed serious concern over reports that its jailed founder, Imran Khan, is suffering from a significant eye ailment, warning that any delay in treatment could result in permanent damage to his eyesight.

Speaking to reporters in Rawalpindi, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said he had learned about the matter through media reports and described the situation as deeply troubling. He stressed the need for uninterrupted family access, saying such meetings were essential, particularly in light of health concerns.

According to the party, credible reports suggest that the former prime minister has been diagnosed with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in his right eye, a condition involving a blockage of the retinal vein. PTI said medical professionals who examined him in jail considered the condition highly sensitive and serious, with a strong risk of lasting vision loss if not addressed promptly and properly.

The party alleged that the Adiala jail administration was insisting that treatment be carried out within the prison, despite a specialist advising that the required care could not be provided there and would need an operation theatre and advanced medical facilities. PTI maintained that this approach placed Khan’s eyesight and overall health in severe danger.

PTI also stated that Khan was last allowed to consult his personal physician in October 2024, describing the denial of further access as a clear violation of court orders and fundamental human rights. The party demanded that he be immediately permitted unrestricted meetings with his family and close associates so they could be assured of his wellbeing.

In addition, PTI called for Khan to be admitted to Shaukat Khanum Hospital or any other reputable medical facility of his choosing to ensure proper treatment. It warned that responsibility for any permanent damage to his eyesight would rest with the government and the jail authorities.

Separately, the Shaukat Khanum Hospital administration sought immediate permission for a medical team to examine Khan. In a statement shared on its official account, the hospital said it was concerned about his health but noted that it could not independently confirm the reports.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and is facing multiple cases, including allegations of corruption and terrorism, following his removal from office through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also reiterated his demand for unhindered family meetings, saying such interactions, including those involving Bushra Bibi, should not be influenced by political considerations. He noted that Bushra Bibi last met her family on November 2, 2025, while Khan’s most recent family meeting took place on December 2, 2025.

Addressing national security issues, the PTI chairman said there should be no political compromise when it comes to terrorism, adding that both provincial and federal governments must ensure the protection of lives and property and should not show leniency toward those who resort to violence.
