KARACHI: Investigators examining the Gul Plaza incident have recovered three digital video recorders from the debris, a development that could provide critical evidence about the events leading up to the tragedy, according to officials.
The DVRs, along with their chargers, were found by the Urban Search and Rescue team in a room near a mosque adjacent to Gul Plaza. The devices were handed over by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to the deputy commissioner of District South for further examination.
Authorities believe the recovered equipment may help establish the cause of the incident and clarify the sequence of events. Technical experts are expected to analyse the footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
In a separate development, human bones were discovered near the site during debris removal. Residents reported that the remains fell from rubble being cleared by a dumper. The bones have been shifted to a hospital for forensic analysis, while police work to determine their identity and whether they are linked to the Gul Plaza incident.
Rescue and recovery efforts remain under way as officials continue to piece together details of what occurred at the site.
A massive fire broke out at Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road late on January 17, leaving the city shaken, with multiple casualties reported and several people still unaccounted for. Although the blaze has been brought under control, authorities say the structure remains unstable.
Search operations, supported by the Army, Rangers and civil agencies, are continuing, while engineers assess the safety of the damaged building. Help desks and DNA collection centres have been established to assist with the identification of victims, and families of the missing remain in contact with officials as the situation continues to evolve.
