KARACHI: All government and private educational institutions across Sindh will remain closed on January 17, as announced by the provincial government in a notification issued on Tuesday.
The holiday marks Shab-e-Meraj, an important event in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims on the 27th of Rajab according to the lunar calendar. On this night, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) embarked on his miraculous journey, Isra, and ascended to the heavens, Meraj, to meet Allah Almighty, traveling through seven skies on the celestial steed, ‘al-Buraq.’
During this extraordinary journey, the Prophet (PBUH) reached the very vicinity of Allah’s Throne, receiving spiritual enlightenment. It was on this night that the five daily prayers (Salat) were decreed as obligatory for Muslims.
To commemorate this sacred occasion, Muslims gather in mosques after the Isha prayer to perform special prayers, which continue until Fajr. Various gatherings and Mahafil-e-Naat are held to honor the night. Homes, streets, and mosques are adorned with colorful pennants, bunting, and illuminated with lights, candles, or oil lamps. Many also visit the graves of their loved ones, praying for blessings for the departed souls.
In observance of this important religious event, both schools and workplaces typically remain closed.
