Gas leak explosion injures six family members in Lahore

LAHORE: A gas leak near Attari Darbar in Lahore led to an explosion that injured six people, including two children, after a gas heater ignited the accumulated gas.

On January 12, 2026, a gas explosion severely injured six members of a family in Nishtar Colony, Lahore. Rescue 1122 reported that the explosion occurred when a gas leak caused gas to accumulate in a room. The gas ignited when the heater was switched on, leading to a powerful explosion and flames.

The emergency services were notified at around 8:30 a.m. about the explosion, which resulted in multiple burn injuries. Rescue teams, including firefighters and paramedics, quickly arrived on the scene to assist and evacuate the family. The injured individuals were identified as Younis (60), his wife Rani (43), their children Bilal Younis (22), Kokab Younis (19), Haider Younis (5), and Fiza Younis (2). All six victims received first aid at the site and were then transferred to Lahore General Hospital for further treatment.

Initial reports suggest that gas leakage inside a closed room created a hazardous environment. When the heater was turned on, the trapped gas ignited, causing the explosion. Firefighters managed to control the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the house.

Authorities urged the public to ensure proper ventilation when using gas heaters in winter and to regularly inspect gas connections to prevent leaks. This incident comes amid a rise in fire-related emergencies in Lahore during the cold season, with several other fires reported that same day.

Earlier in the morning, a fire broke out at a grocery store near Bawawala Stop on Barki Road, and a second fire was reported in a house near Ravi Road. No casualties were reported in either case. A third fire later occurred at a furniture shop near Makkah Colony in Gulberg, where firefighters successfully contained the blaze. The damage to the shop has yet to be assessed.

Rescue officials highlighted that faulty electrical wiring, improper use of gas appliances, and insufficient safety measures often lead to such incidents, especially during the winter months. They recommended the installation of gas detectors, proper ventilation, and regular maintenance of appliances to avoid such dangerous situations. The investigation into the Nishtar Colony explosion is ongoing.
