Punjab Police salutes GPO Chowk bombing martyrs on 18th anniversary

  • IGP, CCPO say sacrifices will never be forgotten, saying police remain frontline force against terrorism

 

LAHORE: Punjab Police on Saturday paid rich tribute to the police martyrs of the GPO Chowk–Lahore High Court suicide bombing on its 18th anniversary, with Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar and Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana reaffirming that the nation and Punjab Police would never forget the supreme sacrifices made by officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

According to a police spokesperson, a suicide attack near GPO Chowk and the Lahore High Court on January 10, 2008, claimed the lives of 16 police officers and officials. The martyrs included ASIs Sheesh Ahmad and Ruftaj Ahmad and constables Muhammad Saleem, Manzoor Ahmad, Muhammad Ahsan, Muhammad Arif, Shahbaz Ahmad, Riaz Ahmad, Naeem-ur-Rehman, Asghar Ali, Muhammad Yaqoob, Muhammad Mansha, Zaheer Shoukat, Ijaz Ahmad, Shahid Ghafoor and Muhammad Asghar, who embraced martyrdom while performing their duties.

Punjab IGP Dr Usman Anwar said the memories of the police martyrs of the GPO Chowk tragedy would always remain alive in the hearts of the people, adding that every officer and official of Lahore Police continued to stand as a frontline force for the protection of the country and the nation.

He said the brave officers and officials who attained martyrdom were a valuable asset of the Lahore Police and reiterated that employment had been provided in the police department to the families of the GPO Chowk martyrs. He added that all possible resources were being utilized to ensure the welfare and well-being of the heirs of police martyrs, terming their sacrifices a guiding light for present and future generations of the force.

On the occasion, police guards visited the graves of Shaheed Constable Naeem-ur-Rehman and Shaheed Constable Muhammad Yaqoob in Lahore. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a salute, laid floral wreaths, and offered Fateha. The sacrifices of the police martyrs were remembered with deep reverence and respect, while family members of the martyrs were also present.

Capital City Police Officer Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana said the martyrs were the pride of the nation, adding that the police had always played a frontline role in the war against terrorism.

Paying tribute to the martyrs of the GPO Chowk–Lahore High Court suicide bombing on its 18th anniversary, the CCPO said the supreme sacrifices of the fallen officers had enabled citizens to live in a peaceful and secure environment today.

Mr Kamyana also lauded the patience, courage and resilience of the martyrs’ families, and assured that the welfare and well-being of the heirs of those who laid down their lives for the country would remain a top priority at all levels.
