Public poll influences decision, despite school leaders’ proposal to reopen on January 12

LAHORE: Following a meeting with the Punjab Education Minister and Education Secretary, school leaders proposed reopening schools, particularly for senior grades, on January 12.

However, the final decision appears to have been shaped by the results of a public poll which favored extending the winter break.

The Education Minister stated that “In view of the prolonged severe winter spell and the forecast of extremely low temperatures in the coming days, and on the advice of PDMA, the Government of Punjab has decided to extend winter vacations till 19th January for all Government and Private schools across the province, in order to ensure the health, safety and well being of students and staff”.

The school leaders expressed their preference for resuming classes as scheduled, but the widespread public support for a longer break, as reflected in the poll, seems to have played a pivotal role in the decision-making process.
