Police releases boy arrested in University of Lahore student suicide attempt

LAHORE: Police have released the boy who was arrested in connection with the suicide attempt of a female student at the University of Lahore, according to sources.

The boy, identified as Ahmed Bilal, was cleared after his statement was recorded during the investigation. Nawab Town Police confirmed that no evidence of his involvement, negligence, or responsibility in the incident was found. Authorities stated that the incident appeared to be of a personal nature, and there was no indication that any other individuals were involved. As of now, no case has been registered.

Police are continuing to gather call data records and other evidence to determine the reasons behind the incident. Once the student’s condition improves, a detailed statement will be recorded from her.

On January 7, 2026, Ahmed Bilal was arrested in connection with the case after investigators learned that the University of Lahore student, Fatima, had wanted to marry him despite opposition from her family. Her parents were reportedly insisting that she focus on her studies instead.

Sources say the student became distressed after her family refused to consent to the marriage, which led her to attempt suicide. Police investigations revealed that Fatima’s last phone call before the incident was made to Ahmed Bilal. Afterward, she deleted his contact information from her phone.

Investigators have also recorded statements from the student’s family as part of the ongoing inquiry. Fatima is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital and has regained consciousness.

Police reported that Fatima sustained serious injuries after falling from an upper floor of the university building. This is the second such incident at the University of Lahore in the past 15 days. A male student, Owais Sultan, also died in a similar incident at the university last month.

According to police, the female student arrived at the university at 7:58 am but did not attend her class. She remained on a phone call for around 27 minutes before jumping from the building at approximately 8:30 am. Authorities also noted that Fatima deleted the record of her last call before the incident.

Her family members informed investigators that they had bought her a new phone the day before because her previous phone was malfunctioning.
