Pakistan endorses China-led UN group on global governance

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday formally backed a China-led initiative at the United Nations aimed at strengthening global governance, as it joined the newly launched Group of Friends of Global Governance established under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed Islamabad’s full support at the group’s inaugural meeting, praising China’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation and collective solutions to global challenges.

He said the initiative reflected Beijing’s efforts to revive confidence in multilateral diplomacy at a time when the international system was facing mounting political, economic and security pressures.

Prime Minister of Pakistan also welcomed the launch of the group, describing it as a historic step towards reinforcing the multilateral order and improving global coordination on peace and development.

In a statement, the premier said the new platform was well-placed to respond to the complex challenges confronting the international community, including conflict resolution, sustainable development and economic stability.

Pakistan’s endorsement places it among the early supporters of the China-led diplomatic grouping, which aims to promote cooperation among states on governance-related issues at the global level.
