  • FO spokesperson says Egyptian FM’s visit contributed to fortifying bilateral ties

ISLAMABAD: The visit of Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty to Pakistan has further strengthened the longstanding bilateral relationship and provided a significant opportunity to deepen cooperation across political, economic, defence, cultural, and educational sectors, a Foreign Office spokesperson said on Sunday.

The FO statement said that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together for regional peace, stability, and shared prosperity.

Dr. Abdelatty’s official visit, from 29–30 November 2025, was undertaken at the invitation of Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan. During his visit, he held a one-on-one meeting with Senator Dar, followed by delegation-level talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussions covered the full spectrum of Pakistan–Egypt bilateral relations, including trade, investment, defence cooperation, cultural and educational exchange, and collaboration in the health sector, particularly Egypt’s support for Pakistan’s national Hepatitis C elimination programme.

To boost economic cooperation, both countries agreed on concrete measures to facilitate private-sector engagement and expand commercial linkages. In the first phase, 250 Pakistani business houses will be identified for priority visa facilitation and business support, with the number increasing to 500 in the second phase. Both sides also decided to establish a Pakistan–Egypt Business Council to institutionalise cooperation and promote mutually beneficial commercial partnerships, alongside a Pakistan–Egypt Business Forum. The Forum, co-chaired by the two foreign ministers, is scheduled to convene in the second quarter of 2026 on the sidelines of the bilateral Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to activate institutional mechanisms and hold senior official-level consultations in the first quarter of next year.

In the field of education, Dr. Abdelatty announced the decision to double Al-Azhar University scholarships for Pakistani students, further strengthening people-to-people and academic ties.

The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and international developments. Pakistan appreciated Egypt’s pivotal diplomatic and humanitarian role in Gaza, including efforts toward ceasefire arrangements and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance. Both sides reiterated their support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Dr. Abdelatty also called on President Asif Ali Zardari, who underscored the historic ties between Pakistan and Egypt and conveyed Pakistan’s desire to elevate the bilateral partnership across all domains. Views were exchanged on regional stability, bilateral cooperation, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with the President appreciating Egypt’s constructive diplomatic engagement on key regional issues.

During his visit, the Egyptian foreign minister also met with Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters. Discussions focused on defence and security cooperation, military exchanges, training collaboration, and regional peace, reaffirming the importance of sustained high-level engagement between the two armed forces.

Dr. Abdelatty further engaged with members of Pakistan’s business community, highlighting the potential for expanding trade and investment opportunities and underscoring the mutual benefits of stronger economic cooperation.
