Outrage sparks after autistic child denied entry to Karachi’s Dolmen Mall’s play area

A video circulating on social media has triggered widespread criticism after a mother reported that Karachi’s Dolmen Mall refused to allow her autistic son into a children’s play area. In the clip, she explains that although her son is nine years old, the play zone only allows children above five, leaving him excluded despite his special needs.

She said the staff spoke to her rudely and declined to refund her ticket. She added that she could not leave her son alone in the larger play area to avoid unsettling other children, yet the management still refused to assist her.

Expressing her frustration, she said her child simply wanted to enjoy the space and was not there to cause trouble. She urged authorities to intervene, noting the lack of accessible parks or inclusive recreational options for special-needs children. She questioned where parents are supposed to take their children if even malls fail to accommodate them.

Social media users reacted strongly, offering prayers, sympathy, and anger over the situation. Many called it deeply upsetting and unfair, while others apologised to the mother for the treatment she received.

Actor Javeria Saud also responded, saying it was painful that society still lacks understanding of autistic children and the silent challenges their parents face. She emphasised the need for compassion, awareness, and support.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong developmental condition affecting communication and social interaction. Its impact varies widely among individuals. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in 127 people globally is on the autism spectrum, with boys more frequently diagnosed than girls, although figures differ by region and awareness levels.
