No high-level alert issued for Karachi, Sindh govt clarifies

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Wednesday dismissed a circulating WhatsApp message claiming a high-level security alert in Karachi from November 12-30, calling it false and unauthorised.

The fake alert, allegedly issued under the name of Sindh Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Syed Kaleem Imam, listed multiple public locations, including Dolmen Mall, Empress Market, and Jinnah International Airport, as “high-risk” and instructed schools, markets, and the public to adopt strict security measures. It warned that failure to comply would result in legal action under the Sindh Security of Vulnerable Establishments Act 2024 and the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

In a clarification, the Sindh Home Department stated no such notification bearing reference number HD/Sec/Clarification-11/2025 was issued. “All genuine security advisories, alerts, and notifications are issued exclusively through official channels of the home department or authorised law enforcement agencies. Any message circulated outside these channels should be considered unauthentic and misleading,” the statement said.

The department urged the public and media to verify information through official government sources and refrain from sharing unverified content on social media.

The clarification comes a day after a suicide blast outside Islamabad’s district and sessions court claimed 12 lives and injured 36, prompting heightened security across major cities, including Lahore.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Home Department extended Section 144 across the province for another month, effective November 12, prohibiting public gatherings of more than four people to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.
