LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is set to represent Pakistan at the prestigious Global COP-30 Conference in Belem, Brazil, underlining the province’s growing role in climate action and sustainable development.
She will inaugurate the Pakistan Pavilion at the event and deliver a keynote address, showcasing Punjab’s ambitious initiatives for environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The conference, which continues until November 21, will also provide an opportunity for the Chief Minister to meet global leaders, heads of international environmental organizations, and climate experts to discuss collaborative strategies for a greener future.
In her keynote, CM Maryam Nawaz will highlight flagship provincial programs including ‘Suthra Punjab’ and ‘Green Punjab,’ the promotion of electric vehicles, and the conservation and expansion of forests and wildlife. Her participation reflects the Punjab government’s firm commitment to tackling the challenges of climate change while promoting environmentally friendly policies at both national and global levels.
Accompanying the Chief Minister are Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister for Education Rana Sikandar Hayat, and Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafique.
Sharing her reflections en route to Belem on the social networking platform ‘X’, CM Maryam Nawaz remarked that the vast forests surrounding Belem serve as a reminder that nature teaches balance, patience, and resilience. She added, “Punjab’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future continues with full zeal and zest. We will effectively present Punjab’s environment-friendly initiatives at the conference.”
The Chief Minister’s participation at COP-30 underscores the provincial government’s determination to implement sustainable development practices and climate-resilient strategies in alignment with global environmental goals.
CM’s Message on World Science Day/Week for Peace and Development
Meanwhile, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of science for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development in her message on World Science Day/Week. She highlighted the need to raise public awareness and encourage youth to embrace scientific research and technological advances.
She outlined several initiatives under the Punjab government’s vision to promote science and technology, including Nawaz Sharif IT City, Nawaz Sharif Cancer Institute and Research Center, Maryam Nawaz Autism School and Research Center, and Nawaz Sharif Medical City, where special attention will be given to medical science research.
The Chief Minister also noted that a unique science and technology show in government schools showcased innovative student projects, including a Wi-Fi model from Rajanpur reportedly 100 times faster than regular Wi-Fi, highlighting the potential of Punjab’s youth in advancing scientific and technological development.
CM Maryam Nawaz stressed, “Progress in science and technology is indispensable for restoring peace and security. Punjab is entering a revolutionary era of IT and silicon, and the government will fully support youth to demonstrate their potential in technology and research.”
