Pillion riding prohibited in Balochistan, women and children exempt

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has imposed a ban on pillion riding on motorcycles across the province until November 30, according to a notification issued on Monday. The measure is part of the existing enforcement of Section 144, which restricts public gatherings and other activities to maintain law and order.

The notification, the second issued in five days, also prohibits covering of faces in public places, the use of mufflers and masks, and the transportation of explosive materials and sulfuric acid. Women and children are exempt from the pillion riding ban.

Authorities said the restrictions were necessary to ensure public safety and prevent potential misuse of motorcycles for unlawful activities. The government reminded citizens that Section 144 will remain in effect until the end of November and urged strict compliance with all directives.

In a related development, the Punjab government on Sunday extended Section 144 across the province until November 15, maintaining a ban on protests, rallies, processions, sit-ins, and public gatherings. The notification also prohibits the assembly of four or more people, display of weapons, and the use of loudspeakers, except for religious purposes such as the Azan and Friday sermons. The distribution of provocative or sectarian material remains strictly banned.

The Home Department in Punjab cited credible intelligence reports suggesting a serious threat to public peace and security, including potential terrorist activity and political or sectarian disruptions. The department directed widespread dissemination of the notification to ensure public awareness and adherence.

Section 144 was first imposed in Punjab on October 10, 2025, for an initial period of ten days, and authorities continue to emphasize that the restrictions do not apply to weddings, funerals, official government duties, or court proceedings.
