ECP proposes extending tenures of interim govts

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has proposed a constitutional amendment to extend the tenure of caretaker governments, recommending that their term be increased from 90 to 120 days in cases where the National Assembly is dissolved before completing its term.

The proposal also seeks to extend the caretaker period from 60 to 90 days when an assembly completes its tenure, under an amendment to Article 224(1) of the Constitution.

According to officials, the ECP’s Legal Reforms Committee submitted the recommendations to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday. The commission also proposed increasing the duration of election campaigns from 28 to 45 days to give political parties more time to prepare for general elections.

Sources within the ECP said the suggested changes were aimed at ensuring smoother election preparations and adequate time for political and administrative processes before polling.
