MQM-P slams Sindh govt’s new traffic fines as unfair to Karachi commuters

KARACHI: Lawmakers from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have criticised the Sindh government’s new traffic fine system, calling it unjust and impractical for Karachi’s current infrastructure conditions.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, MQM-P members of the Sindh Assembly said the introduction of hefty fines and a demerit point system was “an outright injustice to Karachiites,” accusing the provincial government of failing to address the city’s deteriorating roads, faulty traffic signals, and poor civic management.

They alleged that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led Sindh government has misused billions in development funds while neglecting basic urban services, including road maintenance and drainage upgrades.

“Karachi’s roads are broken, traffic lights rarely function, and yet the public is being punished for the government’s negligence,” the statement read. “Instead of improving conditions, the government has chosen to burden citizens through excessive fines.”

The lawmakers argued that such systems are meant for cities with efficient traffic management and safe infrastructure, conditions they said Karachi lacks due to years of mismanagement.
