Punjab bans government employees from using social media. Here’s why?

The Punjab government has implemented a complete ban on the use of social media by its employees to prevent criticism of state policies and maintain public order. A circular issued on Thursday instructed all departments to ensure that civil servants refrain from using platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. This includes not only posting content but also commenting or sharing posts.

The authorities emphasized that such activities could threaten national security, disrupt law and order, or violate moral values, making strict adherence to the ban mandatory. This directive follows previous reminders that government employees are bound by the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1964, which prohibit political activities and unauthorized public statements. The rise of digital platforms has prompted officials to focus on regulating bureaucrats’ online behavior.

Violations of the ban may lead to disciplinary action under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act, with penalties ranging from formal warnings to suspension or dismissal.
