LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced the introduction of a three-shift schooling system to address the educational disruption caused by the recent floods, which have forced over 3,000 schools in the province to close.
During a meeting with UNICEF’s representative in Pakistan, Pernille Ironside, Provincial Minister for School Education Rana Sikandar Hayat outlined the plan. The minister acknowledged that the floods had severely impacted education, with many school buildings either damaged or submerged. The province was already struggling with a shortage of educational facilities, and the floods have exacerbated the situation.
To mitigate the impact, the government will operate existing schools in three shifts, and additional measures will include renting private buildings and setting up temporary tent schools in flood-affected areas. The minister stated that it could take up to three months to restore the damaged schools.
