ISLAMABAD: A protest in Islamabad on Wednesday escalated when a man climbed a mobile phone tower in response to a Rs2,000 fine. The individual, identified as Mohsin, demanded a personal assurance from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi before agreeing to come down.
Emergency teams, including the fire and rescue brigade, arrived at the scene, though no police or district administration officers were present. Fire officials engaged the protester in lengthy negotiations from atop the tower.
“I was fined Rs2,000, and I will only come down if the interior minister personally assures me,” Mohsin told authorities.
After several hours, the protester was safely brought down by the rescue teams and taken into custody by Islamabad Police.
This incident follows a similar protest in Rawalpindi’s Pirwadhai area, where a 33-year-old man climbed an electricity pole and dangled from live wires. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the man fell before the rescue operation could begin. Miraculously, he survived. Authorities confirmed that while Rescue 1122 led the operation, they are not authorized to intervene in potential suicide attempts and urged people to avoid interfering with such dangerous situations.
