Police investigate the killing of three transgender individuals in Karachi

KARACHI: Police are investigating the deaths of three transgender persons, whose bodies were found on a roadside in the Memon Goth area of Karachi early Sunday. The victims had all sustained gunshot wounds, with one shot to the head and two to the chest, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir, Abdul Khaliq Pirzada.

At the crime scene, police recovered spent 9mm bullet casings, a purse, tissue papers, and other personal items. Initial investigations suggest the victims may have been standing by the roadside, possibly attempting to hitch a ride, when they were attacked.

The police confirmed that the victims’ identities were Muhammad Jeel and Alex Riyasat, but the transgender community identified them as Ainee, Asma, and Sameena. Authorities are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examinations, which may provide further evidence.

The assailant reportedly fled the scene after the shooting. Police are examining nearby road cameras for potential leads, though no CCTV cameras were installed at the crime site.

In response to the tragedy, Sindh’s Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah condemned the attack and ordered the police to make immediate arrests. “Transgender persons are a vulnerable segment of society, and we must all give them dignity and respect,” said the statement from his office.

Amnesty International also expressed concern over the increasing violence against transgender individuals in Pakistan, urging the authorities to take swift action to address the rising threats to their safety.
