Mushahid hails Pakistan–Saudi defense pact as ‘historic, timely’

  • Says agreement marks first-ever strategic defense pact between two Muslim powers, linking deal to US ‘betrayal’ of Arab interests and silence on Israeli actions
  • Warns of Israel’s ‘Greater Israel’ project targeting Palestine, Qatar, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, claims Pakistan has ‘displaced West’ as guarantor of ME security

ISLAMABAD: Senior politician and former Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed has hailed the recently signed Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as a “historic and timely” development, arguing that it represents a major realignment in Middle Eastern security dynamics.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mushahid identified three key reasons for terming the pact a landmark moment, stressing its strategic importance in the prevailing geopolitical environment.

“This Strategic Defense Pact, the first of its kind between two major Muslim states, is historic and timely for three reasons,” Mushahid remarked.

Firstly, he said the agreement comes against the backdrop of what he described as the “betrayal” of Arab interests by the United States, particularly its muted response to Israel’s military actions. He underscored that Washington had even remained silent on Israeli provocations against Qatar, a state it officially calls an ally.

Secondly, Mushahid highlighted Israel’s “Greater Israel” project, which he said is aimed at targeting and destabilising multiple countries in the region, including Palestine, Qatar, Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen. He described this expansionist agenda as a grave threat to regional stability and security.

Thirdly, the veteran politician linked the defense pact to Pakistan’s recent military success against India in May 2025. Referring to India as Israel’s “closest ally” in the region, Mushahid said Pakistan had given New Delhi a “bloody nose,” proving its “will, skill, and military capability” to stand firm against regional aggression.

Mushahid concluded that these developments had effectively shifted the balance of power in the Middle East. “Pakistan has quietly displaced the West as the primary guarantor of Middle East security,” he asserted, framing the defense pact as both symbolic and substantive in redefining regional security structures.

The Pakistan–Saudi Arabia Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement carries a critical clause: “Any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both.” Observers say this clause represents the most explicit articulation yet of a joint security shield between the two nations, underscoring the depth of their evolving military and strategic ties.

Signed at a time of intensifying regional tensions, the pact is expected to have wide-ranging implications not only for bilateral relations but also for broader Middle Eastern geopolitics.
