ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Energy has issued an order to ensure an uninterrupted power supply throughout the country during Muharram, with special instructions for distribution companies (DISCOs) to repair or replace faulty equipment promptly.
Energy Minister Awais Leghari addressed all DISCOs, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted electricity supply during Muharram, as millions of people attend religious gatherings and processions. With the holy month coinciding with expected heatwaves, the minister stressed that it was crucial to take all necessary measures to avoid power disruptions.
The order mandates that DISCOs carry out urgent maintenance and load management measures. This includes deploying emergency response teams, ensuring backup power support, and conducting thorough inspections of transmission and distribution networks, particularly in areas hosting Majalis and processions.
Minister Leghari further instructed DISCOs to maintain close coordination with district administrations, law enforcement agencies, and religious gathering organizers to prioritize power supply to critical locations. Proactive communication with consumers, especially those in Imambargahs and mosques, regarding maintenance or load management plans was also emphasized.
Additionally, the minister called for the availability of sufficient materials like transformers and backup systems in each subdivision, ensuring standby generators at sensitive locations. Dedicated control centres and duty rosters will ensure 24/7 availability of technical staff to address power-related issues swiftly.
Leghari underscored the sanctity of Muharram, reminding officials that any negligence would be viewed seriously, and requested a compliance report from all DISCOs.
