CM Maryam urges world to recognize and protect refugee rights

  • In a message on World Refugee Day, Punjab CM says being a refugee is not a crime

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday declared that being a refugee is not a crime, rather a cruel compulsion, urging the world to recognize and protect refugee rights.

“No one chooses becoming a refugee rather it is a painful outcome forced by war, persecution, or disaster to leave one’s “home and soil” to save one’s life,” Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz stated in her message on World Refugee Day.

“No one leaves their homeland willingly. People abandon homes, land, and shelter to survive. Being a refugee is not a crime. It’s a heartbreaking necessity,” she asserted.

She highlighted, “Wars come to an end, but the feelings of homelessness of refugees remain for generations. The helplessness of displaced refugees of Palestine and Syria amounts to a severe test for humanity. The world must realize the grave reality that those who seek asylum are not weak, but oppressed.”

She outlined, “Despite scarce resources, Pakistan has generously hosted millions of refugees by upholding their dignity and esteem. Pakistan has always been a vociferous voice of the oppressed and will continue to raise its voice for the welfare of refugees across the globe. I pray that peace may prevail, oppression be eliminated, and every human being feel solace and peace across the globe.”
