Sindh to launch free eye screenings for school students

KARACHI: The Sindh Education Department is rolling out a province-wide initiative to screen the eyes of government school students, aiming to address concerns about the impact of mobile phone usage on children’s vision. The program will offer free eye tests and glasses to students in need, with the support of a non-governmental organization (NGO).

The initiative is part of efforts to promote early detection of vision issues and improve children’s eye health. Dr Fouzia Khan, Chief Advisor of the Curriculum Wing, highlighted the growing concern over screen exposure and urged school heads to fully cooperate with the program to protect students’ eyesight.

Health experts emphasize the importance of eye exams for detecting conditions like nearsightedness and farsightedness, which can affect academic performance and quality of life. Due to financial constraints and limited access to eye care, many children go undiagnosed. The screening program is seen as a crucial step in addressing preventable vision problems and supporting student well-being across the province.
