ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially declared a public holiday on May 28 in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer, the day commemorating Pakistan’s nuclear tests conducted in 1998 at Chagai, Balochistan.
A notification to this effect was issued by the Establishment Division, confirming that all federal institutions will remain closed on the day.
Earlier, the Sindh government had also announced a holiday for May 28, declaring that all provincial offices, local councils, and associated departments will observe a day off in recognition of the occasion.
In addition, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has announced a closure on May 28, with a formal notification issued by the Chief Market Operations Officer.
Youm-e-Takbeer marks the day when Pakistan became the first Muslim-majority country and the seventh nation globally to attain nuclear capabilities. The tests, conducted in response to India’s nuclear trials earlier that month, significantly shifted the strategic balance in South Asia. It has been officially celebrated as a gazetted public holiday since last year, when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reinstated its national status.
The day is now recognised as a national milestone, symbolising Pakistan’s commitment to national defence and deterrence.
