Members of India’s ruling extremist BJP party vandalized a Karachi Bakery outlet in Hyderabad on Saturday, demanding the owners rename the establishment due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, according to Telangana police. The incident occurred at the bakery’s Shamshabad branch around 3 PM, with police arriving shortly to disperse the protesters.
No employees were harmed, and damage was minimal, with the protestors causing only damage to the bakery’s sign. The bakery, established in 1953 by an Indian family, is named after Karachi, Pakistan, though it is a fully Indian-owned business. The family has previously faced protests, including during the 2019 Pulwama attack. The bakery operates 24 branches in Hyderabad and other cities like Delhi and Bengaluru.
Following the incident, police booked the protesters for wrongful restraint and property damage under sections 126 (2) and 324 (4) of BNS. Despite the attack, no arrests have been made.
