Eid cattle markets in limbo amid security concerns

RAWALPINDI: Preparations for sacrificial cattle markets in Rawalpindi district remain stalled, just two weeks before the Islamic month of Zilhajj. None of the 12 officially designated markets have begun operations due to ongoing security concerns amid the India-Pakistan military tensions.

Contract holders for these markets are worried about heavy financial losses, with no infrastructure set up for the markets in areas like Bhatha Chowk, Adiala Road, and Chakri. Traders from across Pakistan, including cities like Sargodha and Multan, have not yet arrived due to the unstable security situation, further escalating concerns.

Traders like Ahmed Noor Khan have already prepared livestock but are hesitant to transport them in the current conditions, fearing risk to their animals and investments. Some traders have turned to online sales, posting videos of the animals on social media to allow customers to inspect and purchase through digital payment services.

With the recent Pakistan-India ceasefire, there is hope that market activities may resume soon, though the situation remains uncertain.
