PPP reaffirms commitment to equal rights for minorities

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh chapter’s General Secretary, Waqar Mehdi, emphasized on Sunday that his party considers non-Muslims equal citizens of Pakistan, as enshrined in the Constitution.

In his message, Senator Mehdi stated, “President Asif Ali Zardari, during his tenure, announced August 11 as National Day for Minorities.” He added, “The PPP has always stood by the minorities, and the party has a dedicated minority wing.”

Waqar Mehdi reiterated that the PPP believes all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs, ethnicity, or color, are equal and that the Constitution guarantees them equal status and rights.

He further highlighted the party’s efforts to ensure minority representation in all decision-making institutions, including assemblies. “Electing a Christian member as the Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly is a clear reflection of our commitment to treating minorities as equal citizens of the country,” Mehdi said.

He concluded by urging a commitment on this day to prevent any injustices against non-Muslim citizens.
