Senate committee ponders more judges for SC; seeks case backlog info

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice has agreed to consider augmenting the number of judges in the Supreme Court, while seeking comprehensive data on pending cases in the higher judiciary.

Committee Chairman Farooq H Naik stated that the decision on Supreme Court judges would hinge upon the information submitted by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The Law Minister assured that the registrar’s office would provide the necessary case details.

Naik highlighted the imbalance between the increasing case load in superior courts and the stagnant number of judges, currently fixed at 17.

Anusha Rehman noted that the pending bill since January 2023 solely aims to determine the required number of judges for the apex court, with the Federal Law Minister suggesting 24 judges might be necessary.

The minister also pointed out disparities in caseload distribution among judges across different courts, citing recommendations from Bar Councils to limit Article 184-3 cases to senior judges.

The committee deferred further deliberation on the bill to the upcoming session.
