Official Secrets Act to be invoked against those sharing ‘state secrets’ on social media

ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of the sharing of secret state documents on social media, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Monday that action would be taken against all those involved in such practice under the Official Secrets Act, 2023.

According to media reports, the minister said that the spread of such content could harm Pakistan’s strategic and economic interests. “This could also badly damage Pakistan’s relations with its friendly countries,” he added. He said that not only strict action would be taken against those leaking such information but also against those who were indirectly connected to the offence by sharing it.

“Those sharing such documents will have to undergo two-year imprisonment and fine,” he informed.
