Quetta only district where LG election not conducted

ISLAMABAD: An important meeting of Election Commission of Pakistan was held with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in chair here in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Election Commission was briefed that Quetta is the only district where the election has not been conducted yet, the reason for which is non-determining of towns by the government of the Balochistan.

In this regard, the ECP was also updated about the order issued to Secretary Local Government, Balochistan on October 23rd 2022 by Balochistan High Court, to issue a notification to form towns in Quetta district under the Balochistan Local Government Act.

However, the necessary documents and the relevant notification required for delimitation were not provided to ECP even after five months, due to which the delimitation process and conduct of elections has not been made possible till now.

It is pertinent to mention that the ECP has completed the delimitation of Quetta twice, but due to the above-mentioned reasons and the lack of interest of the provincial government, it was not possible to conduct the election.

The ECP has taken notice of the matter and has issued the notice to Chief Secretary Balochistan, to ensure that the matter could be heard, and to guarantee the delimitation process and the election.

Members of the ECP along with senior officers attended the meeting.
