199 more evacuated from Sudan and arrive safely in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH: Saudi Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that 199 more people have been safely evacuated from Sudan and have arrived in Jeddah, after the North African country’s warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire.

The evacuees arrived in Jeddah via navy ship HMS Yanbu, and included nationals from Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Qatar, Syria, the Netherlands, Iraq, Turkey, Tanzania, Lebanon, and Libya, as confirmed in a press release.

Statistics show that a total of 356 people have been evacuated from Sudan, including 101 Saudi nationals and 255 individuals from 26 other countries.

The country is committed to assisting foreign nationals in returning to their home countries and is making every effort to facilitate their departure.

Sudan’s warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire starting on Tuesday, while Western, Arab and Asian nations raced to extract their citizens from the country.

The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) said the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the agreement first and said it followed two days of intense negotiations.

The two sides have not abided by several previous temporary truce deals.
