Ahsan Iqbal reviews progress on ‘Rail Connectivity with Thar Coal Project’

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday reviewed a progress on a project linking Thar Coal Mines with rail network jointly be executed by the federal and Sindh governments.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Planning Commission, Secretary Energy, representatives of Pakistan Railways, Secretary Energy, Government of Sindh and other relevant stakeholders, said a press release issued here.

The project will be executed under EPC mode and will be co-financed by the Government of Sindh on 50% sharing.

The estimate timeline to complete 105KM track from Thar Coal Block-II to New Chhor Railway Station is on March 2023 to start Coal moment operations.

Laying of single Rail track of 105KM from Thar Coal Block-II it with Existing Railway Network along with construction of New Double line from Bin Qasim, Railways Station to Port Qasim Terminal.

During the meeting, the minister directed the concerned stakeholders to expedite the work on this project.
The minister directed Secretary Energy Sindh, to share the details Coal production in the month of April, May and June and submit a report tomorrow.

Similarly, he also directed Secretary Energy to share the exact demand of the Coal.

“This project is essential and will have a positive impact on the country’s economy, “said the minister, while stressing the stakeholders.
The use of Thar coal in power plants would help save $2 billion annually.

It is noted that the prime minister and the chief minister Sindh had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
