Pakistan wins terror financing case against NBP in NY court

ISLAMABAD: What is being described a great success on legal front, the Pakistani government has won a terror-financing case against the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in a Federal Court in New York.

The victory in the case has helped the NBP ward off the threat of billions of dollars penalty, which would have ultimately rendered the bank gone bankrupt.

It is to be noted that that some years ago, the National Bank was accused of facilitating transfer of funds that were used to plan and execute an attack on a US military base in Afghanistan.

According to media reports quoting sources in AGP office, had the National Bank lost the case, a fined of billions of dollars would have been imposed as a penalty on the bank.

The report said that if the National Bank had lost, Pakistan would have faced serious issues in the FATF.

The official said that the case was handled by the International Disputes Unit of the Office of the Attorney General.

The team was led by Ahmed Irfan. Moreover, it was the same team that helped produce positive outcomes in the Karkey, Reko Diq, PIA and Tuwairqi cases.

According to the allegation, Pakistani citizen Saeed Khan, who was residing in the US, sent money to his hometown Mangora (Swat). The same was used in terrorist activity in Afghanistan wherein nine soldiers were killed.
