IHC summons interior secretary, ICT chief commissioner in LG case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday summoned the interior secretary and ICT chief commissioner in a case against local body elections under the Islamabad Local Government Ordinance 2021.

The court also extended its stay order against the local body polls till next date of hearing.

During the hearing of the case by Justice Mohsin Akhter Kayani, the assistant attorney general (AAG) informed the court that the ordinance has been sent to a parliamentary committee to turn it into a law.

The lawyer of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) adopted the stance that his department was not provided maps of delimitation and other data, adding that the ECP has started work at its own.

The court observed that the top court had ordered the federal and provincial governments to conduct local government elections. It further said the secretary interior and ICT chief commissioner could not fulfill their responsibilities.

Later, the court adjourned further hearing of the case till next date.
