Island emerges off Sonmiani coast

KARACHI: A new island has emerged in the Arabian Sea near Sonmiani Beach in the Lasbela District of Balochistan, it emerged Thursday.

Muhammad Moazzam Khan, an adviser for WWF Pakistan, said the island appeared west off the coast of Sonmiani near Kund Malir Beach.

But if history is any precedent, its presence could prove ephemeral. Such landmasses appear due to “excessive geological activities” in the sea, Khan said but warned that some of them disappear after a while.

It merits a mention here that similar Islands had earlier emerged at the same location in 2000 and 2010.

In 2013, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Gwadar, prompting a new island to rise from the sea about 600 meters off Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea.
