Tufail remembered on 63rd martyrdom anniversary

LAHORE: Major Tufail Muhammad was born in Hoshiarpur, India, in 1914. In 1943, he was commissioned in the 16th Punjab Regiment.

In 1958, he was appointed as Company Commander of East Pakistan Rifles, a paramilitary force created to guard the border region.

On August 7, 1958, he launched an offensive against Indian forces that captured a village in the area of Lakshmipur. Despite facing heavy resistance from the invaders, Muhammad and his men carried on with their mission and were able to force the enemy to withdraw their hold over the village.

He received multiple bullets on his chest and embraced martyrdom the same day.

He was awarded Nishan-i-Haider, the country’s highest military award, for his courage and valour. He was buried in Burewala city in the Vehari district.

“Nation salutes Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed; second recipient of Nishan-e-Haider, on his 63rd martyrdom anniversary,” the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a tweet.

“His fortitude, determination and valour remain hallmarks of a soldier who dares to fulfil his mission at all costs.”
