Shamoon Ismail has bold take after NY Mayor Mamdani calls himself longtime fan

Sometimes your biggest fan is someone you never expected.

Pakistani rapper Shamoon Ismail was left genuinely surprised after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed that he has been listening to his music for years.

The unexpected shoutout came during an interview in which Mamdani was asked what had been dominating his playlist lately.

Alongside artists from Uganda and American country star Kacey Musgraves, the New York mayor casually dropped the Pakistani musician's name.

"I've also been listening to a Pakistani rapper named Shamoon Ismail, who I've listened to for a few years," Mamdani said.

The comment quickly made its way to Shamoon, who admitted he had no idea.

"I had no idea that he has been listening to my music for years. Honoured to be the soundtrack of his life. All I can say is that real recognises real. Much love," the rapper wrote.

Fans were equally caught off guard, with many celebrating the unexpected crossover between Pakistan's indie music scene and New York's political leadership.

The endorsement isn't entirely out of character for Mamdani, whose playlists often reflect his multicultural background. Born to a Ugandan father and an Indian mother, the mayor has frequently spoken about his love for South Asian music and culture.

Many still remember him walking off stage to "Dhoom Machale" after his election victory, while he has previously credited Indian-American rapper Heems as one of the people who inspired him to enter politics.

For Shamoon, the recognition comes at an ideal time.

Following successful releases including Used to It, Alone Together, and VOLUME, the singer had taken a step back from the spotlight amid major personal changes, reportedly including his engagement or marriage, before returning with a heartfelt New Year's message to fans.

Turns out, while Shamoon was away, the Mayor of New York had quietly been keeping him on repeat.
