The two leaders discussed developments in the Iran-US peace process, particularly the first round of high-level talks held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, under the joint mediation of Pakistan and Qatar, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a post on X.

At the outset of the interaction, the deputy prime minister congratulated Wang Yi on the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Dar briefed his Chinese counterpart on progress made under the Islamabad MoU, sharing that the negotiations had led to the establishment of a high-level committee tasked with overseeing implementation of the mediation process.

He said three dedicated working groups had also been constituted to focus on the nuclear issue, sanctions, and monitoring and dispute resolution, with the objective of facilitating a final agreement between the parties within 60 days.

The deputy prime minister expressed appreciation for China’s steadfast support for the peace process, particularly highlighting President Xi Jinping’s four-point peace proposal and the five-point Pakistan-China peace initiative.

Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts and underscored the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The two leaders reaffirmed the resolve of Pakistan and China to work closely in support of a negotiated settlement between the parties aimed at bringing a permanent end to hostilities and promoting lasting peace, shared development, and common prosperity, the FO added.

Islamabad MoU sends ‘positive signal’, says China

Meanwhile, China on Wednesday described the US-Iran Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a “positive signal” and called for its effective implementation and safeguarding by all parties.

Addressing a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China advocates dialogue and negotiation as the preferred means of resolving regional disputes and differences.

“China advocates dialogue and negotiation in addressing regional issues and differences among parties and opposes the threat or use of force,” he said.

Guo reiterated that Beijing consistently upholds a just position, supports all efforts conducive to peace, and backs Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and national dignity.

He added that China also supports Iran’s efforts to strengthen relations with Gulf states and other regional countries.

Iran and the United States announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point understanding under Pakistan’s mediation aimed at ending the conflict and resolving outstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiations.

The agreement, known as the Islamabad Understanding, formally entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.

The accord includes provisions aimed at ending hostilities, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.

The understanding also established a framework for continued negotiations and confidence-building measures designed to support long-term regional peace and stability.
