ISLAMABAD: The federal government and the Sindh government have announced public holidays on June 25 and 26 on account of Ashura, which falls on Muharram 9 and 10 this year.
According to a June 22 notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the two public holidays for Thursday, June 25, and Friday, June 26.
In Sindh, the provincial information department also shared a notification on X. The order, issued by the chief secretary, said the holidays would apply across the province for Ashura.
The notification stated that all offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils working under the administrative control of the Sindh government would remain closed, except essential services.
Muharram is observed as a month of mourning, particularly by Shia Muslims around the world. It marks the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, in which Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred.
