GILGIT: The first session of the sixth Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly began on Monday with 30 newly elected members taking oath in Gilgit.
Outgoing Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate administered the oath to the members. Those sworn in included 21 lawmakers elected on general seats, six women members on reserved seats and three technocrats, according to the assembly proceedings reported from the session.
The results of three general constituencies are still pending because of ongoing legal and electoral proceedings. The session, which had been called for 9am for the swearing-in of the newly elected representatives as well as elections for the speaker and deputy speaker, was later adjourned until 3pm.
Following the June 7 election, the Pakistan Peoples Party emerged with 13 seats in the assembly, while the Pakistan Muslim League-N secured nine and the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party won six. Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen and a PTI-backed independent secured one seat each. The PML-N and the IPP have decided to back the PPP in the elections for chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker.
