KARACHI: Pakistan are set to feature in the FIFA ASEAN Cup for the first time after receiving an invitation to join the newly launched tournament, according to reports.
The competition is scheduled to take place in Indonesia from Sept 21 to Oct 6. Reports said the Pakistan Football Federation has agreed to take part, with the national side expected to be placed in Division 1 alongside Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, India and hosts Indonesia.
Local media linked Pakistan’s inclusion to discussions held between Pakistan Football Federation President Mohsen Gilani and FIFA officials. However, official confirmation had not been issued by the time the report was filed.
If confirmed, the tournament would mark Pakistan’s first participation in a FIFA-backed event outside the usual World Cup and continental qualifying competitions. The development comes days after Pakistan beat Afghanistan 2-0 in the final of the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament at the National Stadium, ending a 74-year wait for a football tournament title and securing the country’s first stand-alone international crown.
