Gaming market evolves as player demographics change
New industry data shows US gamers are getting older, with the average player now aged 37, while publishers are also reorganising release calendars around Grand Theft Auto VI. The shifts point to a more mature and concentrated gaming market.

WASHINGTON: The video game business is being reshaped by two parallel trends: an older player base in the United States and a growing industry focus on the late-2026 arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI, according to an Entertainment Software Association report and industry developments highlighted at recent gaming events.
The ESA said the average age of an American gamer has risen to 37, compared with 29 about two decades ago. The increase reflects both long-time players growing older and more older adults taking up gaming. It also pointed to a narrowing gender divide, with men making up 53% of players and women 46%. Among Baby Boomers, women outnumber men, the study found, indicating that gaming has spread across age groups in the United States.
67% of Americans play video games for at least an hour each week. Industry revenue reached $60.7 billion in 2025, recovering to its highest level since the pandemic-era surge in 2021.
ESA president Stanley Pierre-Louis said the figures align with the country’s broader demographics and credited the sector’s long-running voluntary safeguards, including the Entertainment Software Rating Board system and parental controls available on major consoles. He said that framework has helped the industry maintain credibility with policymakers at a time when debates around safety, age verification and in-game spending are intensifying in the United States and Europe.
Scrutiny is rising as games increasingly incorporate features associated with social media. Platforms including Roblox are facing regulatory pressure, while proposed laws are weighing compulsory age checks and nationwide safety standards.
Publishers adjust release plans
At events in Paris and at Summer Games Fest, publishers have begun rearranging launch schedules to avoid going head-to-head with Grand Theft Auto VI. The Rockstar Games title is due for release on November 19 after two delays and is widely expected to dominate sales and public attention deep into 2027.
Industry analysts said other studios are moving away from the busy autumn release period because of the game’s expected impact. Even a launch in October, including for major franchises such as Call of Duty, could struggle for attention because of the focus likely to gather around Rockstar’s release cycle.
At the same time, recent industry showcases have featured both remakes and new titles, underlining publishers’ continued reliance on established franchises while also signalling measured confidence in fresh intellectual property.
The broader picture, according to analysts and trade groups tracking sales patterns, is of a more mature games market in which gaming is no longer seen mainly as a youth activity. Instead, an increasingly diverse and older audience is influencing content creation, monetisation approaches and platform design across console, PC and mobile gaming. They say the combination of demographic change and the market pull of a small number of mega-franchises is likely to shape release strategies, marketing plans and investment decisions well beyond 2026.
